Justice and Compassion

“He has shown all you people what is good. And what does the Lord
require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly
with your God.” Micah 6:8
God has clearly given us his mandate when it comes to our response to injustice and to those in need of compassion and mercy. Not only here in Micah, but throughout Scripture, we see God’s character coming through. He stands up for those in need and his heart is moved in compassion. We want to follow his example as women across Canada both in responding to immediate needs of compassion, and also in the sometimes long process of intervention in issues of injustice.
Kara Powell, Executive Director of the Fuller
Youth Institute and expert in helping the church engage in
justice/compassion issues, defines the difference between justice and
compassion like this:
“Compassion
is a step on the way to Justice. ‘Compassion,’ or ‘service’ , is giving a
cup of cold water to those who are thirsty. Justice goes farther by asking
these tough questions: Why are there people who are thirsty? What can we
do about this problem? Who do we need to speak to about this? How can we
make change happen? Once we have found the answers to these questions, we
can go out and make impactful change.”
Our founder, Dr. A.B. Simpson, entered the lives of the
marginalized regularly. He would have expected this ministry to be
part of who we are and what we do today. While we have responded
globally to justice/compassion issues through our International
Projects, we have not always done so locally. Would you
prayerfully consider how God wants to use you to act justly and love
mercy in your community? Let us know what God is calling you to. Your story will spur someone else on.
There is much to learn as we work to understand justice/compassion issues.
